Supporting Carers to care for our children

SNAICC’s Supporting Carers website is an online resource that aims to empower and provide support to carers of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, ensuring that culture is central in the protection, care and nurturing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children who are in out-of-home care.

SNAICC recognises and appreciates the important role that carers have in protecting and caring for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, and is committed to supporting carers in their important role by developing this culturally appropriate national online resource.

The interactive resource provides accessible and targeted information, practical advice and activities, as well as links to additional culturally appropriate supports and resources.

The Supporting Carers website has four aims:

  1. For out-of-home carers to provide the best culturally appropriate care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children.
  2. That carers feel supported and empowered in their role to provide appropriate care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children.
  3. To build on the existing strengths and experience of carers to ensure the social and emotional wellbeing for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children in out-of-home care.
  4. To improve the information, support and learning opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and non-Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander carers who specifically care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people in out-of-home care.

The Supporting Carers website is divided into five key sections of information.

  • Looking after Yourself
  • Rights of the Child
  • Value and Respect Culture
  • Our Children Thrive with their Culture Alive
  • Fun and Learning
